Better scans, shorter waits: meet the team behind North Manchester’s new MRI scanner

A new MRI scanner is now up and running at North Manchester General Hospital, following almost five months of refurbishment and preparation work.

The latest technology will help the MRI team to:

  • scan patients more quickly
  • produce high-quality images to support clinical decisions
  • improve the experience for patients who may find longer scans difficult
  • introduce more specialist services, including advanced cardiac, breast and paediatric imaging
  • reduce helium use and support our environmental sustainability goals.

The new scanner uses just 0.7 litres of helium, compared with around 1,700 litres in a conventional MRI scanner, reducing reliance on a scarce and expensive resource.

Most importantly, the scanner will help the team continue to improve care for patients in North Manchester, while opening up opportunities to provide more specialist imaging services locally.

Gareth Adams, Chief Executive Officer, CSS said: “Getting the new scanner up and running has been a real team effort. It’s exciting to see months of hard work turn into something that will make a genuine difference for our patients and give our teams even more opportunities to develop services here at North Manchester.”

Behind the new technology is the team using it every day. In our video, members of the MRI team explain what the new scanner means for patients and colleagues, and why making a difference to patients is at the heart of what they do.
