From animal organs to microscopes: Histopathology team inspires Wellington School students

Team members from Adult Histopathology at ORC organised and delivered a Pathology Workshop and Careers Day at Wellington School, Timperley.

Dr James Bolton, Consultant Histopathologist, Emma Lee, Senior Biomedical Scientist, and Dr Rhian Davies, ST5 Histopathology Resident Doctor, gave presentations to science students in years 11, 12 and 13, covering aspects of Histopathology, cancer diagnosis and careers in pathology.

Students were fascinated to learn about what happens to biopsies and organs in the labs at MFT.

An interactive Pathology Workshop was also organised for the students with stations covering anatomy (using animal organs from the local butchers!), dissection, H&E staining and microscopy.

Rob Stafford, Wellington School science teacher, said: “Thank you to the MFT team for providing a fantastic opportunity for the students to apply learning in a real-life context, with hands-on experience in practical techniques, advice about career pathways into Medicine and Biomedical Science, and information about different medical and laboratory specialties”.

RCPath also provided National Pathology Week promotional and educational materials for the students to take home.
