Researchers at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) are working with Lancaster University to help hospitals reduce “gas and air” waste. This follows a £1 million award to the university by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), to lead this research.
Delivering world‑class research is a key part of how MFT improves care for patients and tackles some of healthcare’s biggest challenges. Colleagues are now working with Lancaster University on a major new research project exploring how hospitals can reduce waste associated with gas and air in maternity services, helping to support the NHS’s net zero ambitions.

The project follows a £1 million NIHR award to Lancaster University, with Professor Cliff Shelton, Consultant Anaesthetist at Wythenshawe Hospital, serving as Co‑Principal Investigator. The study will explore opportunities to reduce environmental impact while maintaining patient choice and access to pain relief during childbirth.
