August is Civility Month

This August, CSS is proud to launch Civility Month, a dedicated opportunity to focus on the behaviours that help create a respectful, inclusive and compassionate workplace for everyone.

At its heart, civility is about how we treat one another. It’s the everyday actions that help people feel valued, listened to and respected. A simple thank you, taking time to listen, including colleagues in conversations, or approaching differences with curiosity rather than judgement can make a significant difference to someone’s day.

Why Civility Matters

Research consistently shows that respectful workplaces are happier, safer and more productive. When people feel psychologically safe and valued, they are more likely to speak up, share ideas, collaborate effectively and provide the best possible care and services.

Civility is not about being nice all the time. It’s about creating an environment where people can have honest conversations, challenge appropriately and work together respectfully, even when under pressure.

The way we treat each other directly influences:

  • Staff wellbeing
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Psychological safety
  • Inclusion and belonging
  • Patient care and service delivery
  • Staff retention and engagement

What to Expect During Civility Month

Throughout August we will be sharing practical resources, conversation starters, reflections and real-life examples to help us all think about how we contribute to a positive workplace culture.

You can look forward to:

  • Weekly civility themes and tips
  • Team discussion resources
  • Leadership reflections
  • Opportunities to recognise and thank one another
  • Resources to support respectful conversations and positive challenge

You can find all the resources you need in this pack which includes links to learning, videos, our CSS Civility toolkits and more.

A Collective Responsibility

Creating a civil workplace is everyone’s responsibility, regardless of role, profession or seniority.

This month is an opportunity to pause and reflect:

  • How do I help others feel valued?
  • Do people feel heard when they speak to me?
  • How do I respond when I disagree with someone?
  • What small action could I take today to make a colleague’s day better?

Often, the smallest actions have the biggest impact.

Get Involved

We encourage all teams to make time during August to discuss civility, share examples of positive behaviours and recognise colleagues who make CSS a great place to work.

If you have a story, example or colleague you’d like to celebrate during Civility Month, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, let’s continue building a culture where everyone feels respected, included and able to thrive.
