A major milestone in bringing healthcare closer to local communities has been reached today with the opening of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust’s latest Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) at Withington Hospital.
The new centre will provide faster, more convenient access to a wide range of diagnostic tests and investigations, helping patients receive earlier diagnoses and treatment closer to home.
Open 12 hours a day, seven days a week, the Withington CDC is expected to deliver around 129,000 tests every year. Designed around patient convenience, the centre will enable many people to receive multiple diagnostic tests during a single visit, reducing the need for repeated appointments and making it easier to access care.
The purpose-built facility offers a comprehensive range of services, including CT and MRI scans, ultrasound, DEXA scans for bone density, endoscopy, cardiology investigations and respiratory testing.
A key feature of the new centre is the introduction of a dedicated Children and Young People’s asthma pathway. The service will support faster diagnosis and treatment for children with asthma closer to home, reducing the need for repeat hospital visits and improving the experience for patients and their families.
The opening of the Withington CDC represents another important step in MFT’s ambition to bring care closer to communities. The new facility expands the Trust’s existing network of Community Diagnostics Centres in Harpurhey and Gorton, helping to make appointments more convenient, accessible and efficient for local people.
By increasing diagnostic capacity and providing access to a range of investigations under one roof, the centre will help ensure patients receive the right tests, in the right place, at the right time.
