Overview of the week Welcome to the latest edition of our One Born Every Minute newsletter. We’ve now filmed 10 births for this series, and while they reflect the wide range of experiences you support every day, one constant stands out—your care, skill and compassion. The production team, who have filmed extensively across previous series, have described the care here as “off the scale,” particularly highlighting the strength of teamworking through rotations and handovers. This is something you should all be incredibly proud of. Last week captured some wonderful stories, with several C-sections featured. One couple received outstanding care from five midwives over two days; despite hoping for a natural birth, they ultimately required a caesarean. Their story powerfully illustrated compassionate care in the context of a language barrier, as well as the realities of a prolonged induction. Another couple arrived for an elective C-section during a particularly busy period in theatre, with complex cases taking priority. They returned the following day and safely welcomed their baby before 11am—highlighting the pressures our maternity services manage so well. We also saw a lovely natural birth story, where a couple progressed from triage to Ward 66 and then to delivery later that afternoon. With excellent support from their midwife Pascale, they achieved a calm, natural birth without pain relief. The production team were particularly struck by the quality of care and the couple’s enthusiasm—even setting up their own filming post-birth! We know there have been some understandable concerns about everyday conversations being captured during filming. Please be reassured that the programme is focused on care and clinical stories, not informal ward conversations. If you do have any concerns, you can always speak to the floor team, who will ensure this is noted—these moments will not be included in the final edit. Similarly, ongoing arrangements are in place to respect colleagues who have not consented to filming. The production team work closely with rota coordinators and are careful to avoid capturing non-consenting staff. There is no need to check in the gallery—the team are managing this alongside filming and technical requirements and are available on the ward to support with any queries.
