Jan exemplifies the purpose and spirit of the Chief Nursing Officer Lifetime Achievement Award. Over nearly four decades of continuous NHS service, she has delivered exceptional leadership, outstanding clinical impact, and transformational change across multiple Trusts and regions in the North West. Her contribution has benefitted patients, colleagues, and health systems at scale, marking a lifetime of influence that is both profound and enduring.
Jan’s career demonstrates a consistent commitment to improving the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care—particularly in the fields of musculoskeletal health, orthopaedics and AHP leadership. Her leadership has repeatedly driven major service redesign and integrated care improvements. At Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust, she delivered a highly successful three‑year transformation programme across MSK and Orthopaedic services, significantly improving access, quality and patient experience from first point of contact through to specialist intervention. She has led innovations that streamlined pathways, reduced unwarranted variation, and demonstrably improved outcomes, capacity and flow. These achievements are the result of a leader who combines strategic vision with deep clinical insight and operational discipline.
Jan’s impact extends far beyond organisational boundaries. Regionally and nationally, she has been a driving force for AHP advancement. She co‑developed and led Tier 2 MSK services, aligning them with RightCare principles and achieving excellence recognised by NHS Improvement. Her leadership of the North West Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner Group further shaped professional standards, service quality and advanced practice roles across the region. She has influenced national policy direction through expert contributions, formal leadership forums and the development of cross‑system pathways that are now embedded as standard practice.
A hallmark of Jan’s career is her conviction that excellent patient care is rooted in empowered, well‑developed staff. She has shown unwavering commitment to developing AHPs—from students and early‑career practitioners to advanced and consultant-level clinicians. She has led multi-professional teams through complex change, consistently building cultures of trust, accountability and high performance. Many of the AHP leaders working in the region today credit Jan with mentoring, championing or directly shaping their career trajectories.
Her leadership maturity is matched by compassion and humility. Jan is widely respected for her integrity, her steady presence during periods of intense operational challenge, and her ability to bring people together around a shared vision for improvement. She role‑models the values and behaviours that define the very best of the NHS.
Jan’s 38‑year career embodies the criteria of this prestigious award: long‑standing excellence, transformational leadership, significant contribution to patient care, and sustained impact on individuals, organisations and the wider profession.
