MFT leadership update

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to update you on the progress we have made with appointments to our new Clinical Group Senior Leadership structure.

The formation of our Clinical Groups, and the strong leadership teams that will guide them, are critical first steps in moving towards a clear and consistent Operating Model for MFT. As we have created our new Clinical Groups we have been guided by a set of clear design principles, which you can view here, to ensure we develop an Operating Model that is clinically led, collaborative, and patient focused.

We will commence the implementation of the new model from Monday 30 September, and from this point the Chief Executives of these Clinical Groups will join our Trust Executive Directors as part of a new Trust Leadership Team, a group led by myself as the Trust Chief Executive. Together we will be the group that oversees the day-to-day running of MFT. This collaborative approach will support our aim to come together as one MFT to deliver our new Trust strategy, whilst retaining the identity of our hospitals and services that resonate with our colleagues and patients.

Clinical Group Chief Executive appointments

I can now confirm the following substantive appointments to our Clinical Group Chief Executive positions:

  • Stephen Dickson for the Wythenshawe, Trafford, Withington, and Altrincham Clinical Group
  • Katy Calvin-Thomas for the Manchester and Trafford Local Care Organisations and University Dental Hospital Manchester Clinical Group
  • Jo Rowe for the North Manchester General Hospital Clinical Group.

Over the next year we will finalise the recruitment process to appoint substantively to the three remaining Clinical Groups. During this time, the following interim arrangements have been confirmed:

  • Dawn Pike will continue to act as the Interim Chief Executive at Manchester Royal Infirmary as it moves to its Clinical Group structure
  • Ian Lurcock, who is currently acting as Interim Chief Executive for our Eye and Dental Hospitals. He will now take on the role as Interim Chief Executive for the Specialist Hospital Clinical Group (Saint Mary’s MCS, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital)
  • Gareth Adams will take up the role as Interim Chief Executive for the Clinical and Scientific Services Clinical Group.

You can find further details of the Clinical Group Senior Leadership appointments here.

Our new Clinical Group Chief Executives and their Senior Leadership Teams will lead important changes to how we work across their sites and services. We are committed to supporting them, as they support their teams, to implement new ways of working and develop a culture where everyone can thrive.

Continuing to review and refresh our Operating Model

The work to review our wider Operating Model must now continue so that we can effectively support our new Clinical Groups, and their teams, to deliver against their leadership, quality, operational, and financial, responsibilities. To ensure they have the support they need, it is now necessary for the Organisational Development programme to consider how our Corporate Services may need to adapt or change, to support the new ways of working, and the day to day running of the Trust.

As we work to review and develop our Corporate Services, we will be guided by the same set of principles that helped us to shape our Clinical Groups and our Strategy and Improvement teams. Your contribution to this process is vital, and there will be continued engagement and support from the Organisational Development Programme team as they work with you on the implementation of the Clinical Groups and the development of our Corporate Services.

We will shortly be providing an all-colleague programme update, and I will keep you updated on all material developments as we move closer to the next phase of implementation of the new Operating Model.

Existing line management and accountability arrangements will remain in place until the implementation of the new model.

Thank you for your continued efforts and commitment to providing the best care to our patients and communities.

Many thanks,

Mark
