Dear CSS team members
As the Clinical and Scientific Services (CSS) leadership team, we firstly want to thank each of you for your hard work and commitment to serving patients and families across all our sites and services.
Across the country there are changes taking place in all areas of the NHS, and we at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) are no different.
As your leadership team, we are here to support you – and keep you up to date as much, and as often as we can.
One of our top priorities, this year, is strengthening our collaboration and unity as one Trust. The One MFT programme is central to this.
The One MFT ‘operating model’ is a blueprint for how MFT structures its resources, processes, governance and culture.
As we continue our One MFT journey across the Trust, and within CSS, I want to provide you with an update on our progress.
- Phase one – Clinical Groups, and how we lead our services (complete)
- Phase two – Corporate Services (complete)
- Phase three – Strengthening clinical leadership and consultation (currently underway)
The One MFT model will deliver our Trust mission of ‘working together to improve the health and quality of life of our diverse communities’.
Phase one: Clinical Groups and how we lead our services (complete)
Previously named hospitals and Managed Clinical Services (of which CSS was one), are now called Clinical Groups.
Following the establishment of the six Clinical Groups last September, work has been taking place to review their organisational structures.

We need to create the best leadership model to deliver our improvements. It is a significant, and necessary, step towards realising our ambitious Trust strategy and mission.
This part of the programme focusses on building on the leadership excellence and experience throughout our Clinical Groups, to deliver patient care effectively.
Our new model aims will help us all work more collaboratively and consistently together.
Phase two: Corporate Services (complete)
Over the past few months, a key focus of the programme has been to review how our much-needed corporate services best support CSS.
Consultations have been underway, and I want to thank all our corporate team members for sharing your feedback.
Your input is fundamental in shaping our service model, and we will continue to engage and support you as this work continues.
Phase three: Strengthening clinical leadership and consultation (currently underway)
The calibre and quality of clinical leadership in CSS, and across MFT, is one of our biggest assets.
We have focused on strengthening our Trust clinical leadership model across MFT. This means we will be making decisions at the closest possible point to our patients.
Our new model will not be designed in isolation. Proposals for the new model and organisational structure will be shared with those colleagues directly impacted by the changes as part of consultation.
Your wellbeing is always important, but especially during times of change.
We want you to know where you can get support if you need it.
- Speak to your line manager in the first instance.
- Support available from Human Resources (HR) and Organisational Development (OD).
- CSS senior leadership team will make themselves available to questions and feedback you may have.
